Aizawl,
the present state capital of Mizoram came into being as a fortified
post on the recommendation of Mr. Dally of the Assam Military Police
Battalion in the spring of 1890. It is now 112 years old and is
at an altitude of 4000 ft. above sea level. It has a population
of approximately 2 lakhs. The city stands on a high ridge surrounded
on the east by the deep green valley of the river TUIRIAL and on
the west by the river. TLWNG with its lush emerald valleys. On the
north, Aizawl is protected by beautiful high craggy hills of DURTLANG
and the capital city stands like a huge citadel. It is adorned by
picturesque scenery and peaceful surroundings with mild and enjoyable
weather throughout the year. Aizawal is an ideal hill station for
tourists looking for solititude, clean and fresh environment and
new destinations.
Aizawl is the political and cultural centre of Mizoram. It is here
that the State Legislature is situated. It is also the seat of the
Government and all important Government as well as Public Sector
offices are located at Aizawl. It is also the commercial hub of
the State and all commercial and economic activities are centred
around the city.

Bung Picnic Spot :
A beautiful picnic spot on a hill, just 15kms away from Aizawl on
Aizawl-Lungleri Highway.
Tamdil Lake :
A beautiful natural lake, 85 kms. East of Aizawl near the village
of Saitual is an ideal place for picknickers. There is a cafeteria
as well as cottages for overnight stay. Boating facilities are also
available.
Vantawng Waterfull :
The highest waterfall in Mizoram. It is 750 ft. high surrounded
by lush green forests filled with bamboo groves. There is a cafeteria
as well as cottages for one night's stay.
Falkawn :
It is 18kms south of Aizawl, the State Capital. A typical Mizo village
is a place of interest for both tourists and locals.
Champhai :
This is a border town and is also the District Headquarters. It
is situated 192 kms east of Aizawl on the Indo-Myanmar border. It
is a bustling commercial centre and a paradise for nature lovers.
Phawngpui :
Literally means 'Blue Mountain', is located at a height of 2165
metres above sea-level. It is 300kms away from Aizawl towards southern
tip of Mizoram. Rich in exotic flowers, orchids, medicinal herbs.
The ecosystem, rich in bio-diversity, is protected and preserved
by the State Government and is open only to trekhers and hikers.
How to go there :
Air : Lengpui airport, 45 kms west
of Aizawl is connected by Alliance Air service from Kolkata every
Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Indian Airlines also operate daily
flight from Kolkata to Silchar (Except on Sundays) which is 180
kms. Aways from Aizawl.
Road : Aizawl is connected by NH 54.
Day and Night service of private and Government buses are available
from Guwahati to Aizawl via Shillong and Silchar. In addition Maxi
Cabs are also available from Guwahati, Shillong and Silchar to Aizawl.
Entry formalities :
Domestic Tourists :
Inner line permit can be obtained from Liaison Officers posted in
New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong and Silchar. Two passport
size photographs are required to be attached on the prescribed forms.
Foreign Tourists :
For a group of 4 or more persons, Restricted Area Permit (RAP) can
be obtained from the Government of Mizoram through Liaison Officers
posted at New Delhi, Kolkata & Guwahati. For less than 4 persons
RAP has to be obtained from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government
of India.
