The
district of Chamoli with Gopeshwar as its headquarter is surrounded
by Tehri Garhwal, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, Almora and
Pauri Garhwal districts and with Tibet lying to its north.
A blessed spot, there are hundreds of shrines particularly dedicated
to Lord Shiva spread over the hills of Chamoli. Chamoli has immense
geographical, historical, religious and cultural importance. The
celebrated shrine of Badrinath, three out of five Panch Kedar and
Panch Badri, Hemkund Sahib are situated here in Chamoli. The well
known Valley of Flowers and Auli Bugyal are a delight for tourists
and adventure enthusiasts. It is said that Hanumanji found the Sanjeevani
herb here to revive the unconscious Laxman. It is believe that Ved
Vyas composed his immortal epic, the Mahabharata here. This land
has inspired the imagination of great poets like Kalidas.
Getting There
Jolly Grant, 221 km is the nearest airport. Rishikesh, 204 km is
the nearest railway station. Chamoli is well connected to Dehradun,
Haridwar, Rishikesh, Almora and Nainital.
Places of Interest
Shiv Temple :
The temple is topped by a dome and twenty four doors lead to the
sanctum sanctorum which is 30 sq.ft. in area. There are several
broken idols around the temple which support the theory that in
ancient times there were several more temples in Gopeshwar. A gleaming
trident, made of eight different metals, dating back to the 12 century,
bears inscription attributed to Anek Malla, king of Nepal, who reigned
in the 13th Century. It is believed that while brute force cannot
move his trident, the slightest touch by a true devotee can cause
a tremor in it.
Excursion
Anusuya Devi & Atri Muni Ashram
:
The temple is situated on Gopeshwar-Kund- CJaurikund motorable road,
19 km from Gopeshwar & 29 km from Chamoli. One has to first
reach a place called Mandal (13 km, motorable) & then trek 6
km to reach Anusuya Devi or Anusuya Ashram. It is situated at an
altitude of 2000 m. Devi Anusuya is revered as the Goddess who blesses
her devotees with children. A large fair is held in the month of
December on the occassion of Duttatreya Jayanti when thousands of
belivers come here to worship the Goddesses throughout the night
with lamps ablaze in their hends.
At a distance of 2 km from Anusuya Deve temple is the ashram of
Atrimuni the husband of Anusuya Devi. The ashram is in the form
of a cave temple. The cataracts of Amritkund & Arnrit Ganga
provide a wonderful sight for the tourists. This is said to be the
only place where devotees circumambulate around the river as a mark
of reverence.
Rudranath :
It is one of the Pand Kedars, 23 km from Gopeshwar (5km morotable
till village Sagar & then 18km trek from here). The face of
the how Shiva is worshiped here.
Valley
of Flowers :
This is a unique world of flowers - the valley now declared a National
Park is a breathtaking spectacular sight specially during the monsoons
in July & August. About 82 km from Gopeshwar through Joshimath
is terminus Govindghat for Valley of Flowers.
Kuari Pass :
Also known as Curzon's trail, the entire area is rich in exotic
flora & fauna, besides dense forests with associated thrills.
On the other side of Kuari Pass is the Nanda Devi Sanctury. The
Pass can be approached from Tapovan via Auli Gorson, Chitrakantha
or from the south from Ghat via Ramni.
Adi Badri Dham :
16 km from Karnaprayag, it is one of the Panch Badris. Alongwith
several temples of Narayan and Vishnus, one can visit a small lake
Benital nearby and the ruins of old forts of Garhwali Rajas.
Roop Kund :
Also known as the mystery lake, with remains of human and equine
skeletons, situated at an altitude of 5029 m, it is one of the most
popular trek.
Hemkund :
World's highest shrine at an altitude of 5329 m is believed to be
the place where tenth sikh guru, Guru Govind Singh ji had meditated.
Auli :
This ski resort can be reached by road from Joshimath, 72 km from
Chamoli, with its hoary snow slopes and skiing facilities being
provided by GMVN, the place heightens the spirit of skiers and adventures
seekers.
Kalpeshwar :
23 km from Joshimath, the temple set deep in the picturesque urgam
valley forest, Lord Shiva hair and head are worshipped here.
Joshimath :
Molding an important position in the history of Hindu revivalism
Adi Guru Shankaracharya attained enlightment here and established
a Math (Hermitage Centre) here.
The Scared Prayags : Among
the Panch Prayags ofGarhwal, three of them that is Karnaoravas,
Nandoravae and Vishnuprayag are here in the district of Chamoli.
Badrinath :
One of the four Dhams, Badrinath is one of the most celebrated pilgrimage
spot of the country situated at an elevation of 3133 m, 42 km from
Joshimath and 106 km from Gopeshwar.
