Udhagmandalam Popularly
known as Ooty. Udhagamandalam, was the summer capital of the British
rulers in India. The misty blue haze of Nilgiris and the fragrant
rain forests lure millions of tourists to Ooty every year.
Situated at an altiude of 2268 meters above sea level, it was "discovered"
in the early 18the Century. Snooker is said to have originated on
the billiards table of the Ooty Club at the hands of an army officer
Neville Chamberlain.
The Smaller hill resorts adjoining Ooty - Coonoor & Kotagiri
have the same dewy fresh mornings and breezy calm evenings of Ooty.
The botanincal gardens established b the Marquis of Tweeddale in
1847, continue to be a major attraction. The Ooty flower show and
the dog show are popular events held annually. Trout fishing is
a popular sport at Avalanche, 24kms away form Ooty. Other famous
spots - Doddabetta, Lamb's rock, Pykara Lake. Accommodation is available

but tariff vary during peak season (Mid may) / off seasons.
The fragrance of eucalyptus, Cinchona and tea mingle and greet the

Top Slip
A picturesque locale in the Anamalai hills. It is about 37 kms from
Pollachi ( about 90 kms from Coimbatore). There are bungalows available
within the sanctuary. For thrill seekers, accommodation is also
available in a tree top house.
Parambikulam aliyar
The project consists off a series of dams interconnected by tunnels
and canals for hemassing the Parambikulam. Aliyar, Nirar, Sholiyar.
Thunakadavu, Thekkadi and Palar rivers, lying at various elevations,
for irrigation andpower generation. The scheme is an outstanding
example of engineering skill. It is located in Anamalai range and
is ideal for picnics. Overnight stay is possible in forest rest
houses. A treetop house provides accommodation for the adventurous.
Thirumurthy Temple
It is situated at the tool of Thirumurthy Hills adjoining the Thirumurthy
Dam. This is about 20 kms from Udumalpet on the highway from Palani
to Coimbatore. A perennial stream flows by the side of the Amalingeswarar
temple and nearby there is a water fall. The Crocodile Farm at Amaravathy
Dam is nearby.

Waterfalls
About 37 kms west of the city are noted for their captivating beauty
and the sweetness of water. The panoramic view of the dam and the
falls are of enchanting beauty.
Bhavani (121 kms)
The Sangameshwar Temple at Bhavani is situated at the confluence
of the Rivers Bhavani and the Cauvery. This place is called "Tiruveni
of South India". It is an important pilgrim center. Lord Sangameshwarer
with His consort Vedanayaki is the presiding deity. It is said that
during the East India Company regime the then Collector of Coimbatore
and Salem Districts, Willam Garrow, who had his headquarters at
Bhavani, worshipped Goddess Vedanayaki. One night the Goddess directed
him in his dream entire bunalow collapsed. In wonder at this miracle,
he presented to the temple an ivory cradle, which is still in the
temple, with his signature.
Vaidehi Waterfalls
It is located 30 kms from Cioimbatore vi. Varasipuram village. It
is a fine picnic spot for trekkers. A perennial waterfalls is a
major attraction here.
Tirupur
An important textile center in Coimbatore district. It is also famous
for hosiery products. Tirupur is also closely associated with Tirupur
Kumaran a valiant freedom fighter. It is 50 kms from Coimbatore.
Palani
The temple of Lord Muruga is located on the Palani Hills. The presiding
deity is Dandayuthapani. The idol is made of medicinal herbs. It
is one of the six abodes of Lord Muruga and one of the major pilgrim
centers in South India. An electrically operated winch tekes the
pilgrims to the top it is 105 kms from coimbators.
Bannari
Located in Erode district, it is about 83 kms from Coimbatore and
10 kmsfrom Bhavanisagar. The Mariamman temple here is very famous
and attracts thousands of pilgrims.
is 40 kmsfrom Erode and 104 kms from Coimbatore. Aspecial feature
of this place is that shrines for Siva, Vishnu and Brahma are located
in onelemple complex. Sivais known as Muchukundeswarar and Vishnu
as Veera Narayana Perumal. This is one of the important temples
in Erode district.

This falls is situated 35 kms from Coimbatore on the Coimbatore
- Siruvani Main Road.

is 65kms from Coimbatore and 27 kms form Pollachi on Coimbatore-

Pollachi
This town is about 40 kms from Coimbatore on the way to Parambikulam
- Aliyar project. Next to Coimbatore, it is the leading town of
the district and an important commercial centre. A temple dedicated
to Mariamman and another to Subramanya are located here. There are
beautiful stone (carvings of a fivehooded serpent, a yali with a
chain hanging from its mouth and zodiac signs in the Subramanya
temple.
Avinashi
The AvinashiLingeswarar temple located here is about 40 kms from
Coimbatore. Avinashi is also known as Southern Banaras. Dating back
to the 12th century AD this is the biggest temple in Coimbatore
district built by the Cholas. There are some fine stone carvings
in this temple. This place was earlier called Pikkoigul.
Kodumanal (40kms from Erode)
It is a small village on the banks of the Noyyal river, it is an
archaeological site dating back to the 2nd century BC. Here lie
the remains of a Megalithic settlement where the inhabitants were
highly skilled craftsmen, specialized in making beads and high quality
steel.
Guruvayur
The Guruvayurappan temple situated here is an important Vishnu temple
in the State of Kerala for Hindus, especially Vaishnavites. This
is one of the important pilgrim centres. It is 150 kms from Coimbatore.
Erode
The Headquarters of the Erode district. It is the birth place of
Periyar E.V.Ramasamy, who is affectionately called "Thanthai
Periyar" by the people of Tamil Nadu. He was a great social
reformer, rationalist and politician. There are also two ancient
temple one dedicated to Lord Siva and the other to Lord Vishnu.
There are some interesting inscription in these temples. The handloom
products of Erode are very famous. It is about 92 kms from Coimbatore.
Chennimalai
It is an important handloom weaving centre in the Erode district.
It is 30 kms from Erode and 80 kms from Coimbatore. There is a temple
on the top of the hill. The original idol of Lord Muruga is not
there anymore. It has been replaced by another idol of the same
deity, with six faces.
Vaiparai
It is 102 kms from Coimbatore in Western Ghats on the Anamalai range.
It has many tea plantations and is a picnic spot.
