Perur
Temple The
temple is at its colourful best in March, when the Panguni Uthiram
festival is celebrated. Siva, the presiding deity of this temple,
is known as Patteeswarar, and his consort Parvati is known as Pachchai
Nayaki. The temple has a number of huge statues. Decorating one
of its halls - The Kanagasabai Hall - are some exquisite sculptures.
The temple was built by Karikala Cholan. Situated 7 kms from Coimbatore,
the temple is by the River Noyyal.
V. O. C. Park
This park, maintained by the Municipality, is dedicated to the memory
of V. O. Chidambaram Pillai, one of the stalwarts in Tamilnadu who
fought against British imperiatlism. Also part of the park are an
aquarium, a mini - zoo and a toy train circuit.
Agricultural Uniersity
The State Agricultural University is situated about 5 kms from Coimbatore
Railway Station. Originally an Agricultural College. It had its
beginnings in the Agricultural Demostration Farm that was started
in 1968 in Saidapet, Chennai. This was shifted to Coimbatore in
1907 and became a Agricultural College of repute in the course of
time. Today, it is the Tamil Nadu Agricultural university, one of
the sixteen major Agricultural Universities in the Country and one
of the best of South Asia, from where students come to it in large
numbers.
Forest College
Coimbatore, which is an educational center of importance, is also
the home of the Forest College, one of the oldest institution of
its kind in India. The college, which has an international reputation,
also has an interesting museum.
Marudhamalai Temple
This temple dedicated to Lord Muruga is set atop a hill. The presiding
deity. Dhandayuthapani, is said to have performed a number of miracles
to make his devotees happy. The temple is 12 kms from Coimbatore
Railway Station and Bus Stand.
G. D. Naidu Industrial Exhibition
This industrial exhibition was established by that visionary industrialist,
the late G. D. Naiodu. A legend in his lifetime. He made valuable
contributions to the field of electronics and I the mechanization
of agriculture. This permanent exhibition is a testimonial to these
achivevements.
