This
sanctuary is situated at an altitude of 1,400 meters in the western
ghats near Pollachi. The area of the sanctuary is 958 Sq/ km It
has various kinds of wild fauna like elephant, gaur, tiger, panther,
sloth bear, pangolin, black headed oriole, green pigeon and civet
cat.
The Amaravathy reservoir in the Anamalai has large number of crocodiles.
There are also many places of scenic beauty such as Karain shoal.
Anaikunthi shoal, Grass hills, waterfalls, groves, teak forests,
estates, dams and reservoirs.
Arrangements are available at Topslip to take tourists around the
Sanctuary on elephant back or by van.
Madumalai Wildlife Sanctuary
This Wild Life Sanctuary is situated on the Ooty-Mysore National
highwayataheightof900-1140Mts,andhasanareaof324sq.km. The Moyar
river draws the border line at Bandipur in Karnataka State and on
the other side it extends upto the Kerala border at Wynad.
The
reception centre of Mudumalai is at Thepakadu, 51 kms from Ooty
and 11 kms from Gudalur. The distance from Mysore is 97 kms. Bus
services from Ooty are available at 07.30, 11.00, 15.30,16.30 hours
and the journey takes 21/2 hours. Conducted tours bring tourists
from Ooty to Mudumalai. From Ooty buses ply along the National highway
to Hassan, Mysore and Bangalore via Theppakadu. Minibuses are also
available. Elephants, Gaur (Bison), Sambar, Spotted deer, Barking
deer, Mouse, Deer, Panther, Bear, Wild bear, Wild dog, Hyena, Porcupine
and other animals may be spotted in the sanctuary as well as on
the Ooty-Mysore National Highway.
