Despite
its being a burgeoning metropolis, Delhi offers surprising range
of options to those who enjoy the outdoors. The riverrain tract
along the Yamuna, the dry scrubland forests of the Northern Ridge,
natural and artificial lakes and the rockey outcrop near the Qutab
complex allow for quiet as well as adventurous outdoor activities
bird - watchers can enjoy a rich variety of bird life in Delhi,
especially in the Ridge and the green areas surrounding the cities
historic monuments.
In winter, the Delhi zoo is transformed into a small bird Sanctuary
with migratory birds halting by its artificial lakes. Painted Strokes,
Pintail Ducks, Bar headed Geese and spot bill Ducks are among the
migratory birds which can be seen here.
Delhi's tree - lined avenues are also reach in avian life. So are
the forests of Ridge, which harbor more than 100 species of birds,
from peacocks to predators. The Ridge is accessible through narrow
paths that lead off Sardar Patel Marg. Those in search of greater
adventure can sample the thrills of aqua sports.
A multi-sports and leisure complex with all facilities for water
sports- padal - boating, kayaking - canoeing and speed boating -
has been created by Delhi Tourism at Bhaleswa Lake, situated on
Delhi north - eastern edge. Fishing is also permitted here.
Delhi
Tourism has also provided paddleboats at other water bodies in the
heart of the city. These include the lakes near India Gate, Purana
Qila- Prasad Nagar Lake and Naini Lake in Model Town. A variety
of fiberglass boats have been acquired by the Corporation and can
be hired at reasonable rates. Special training programs in kayaking
and canoeing are organized at the latter too.
Delhi Tourism's Adventure Park at Lado Sarai extends a daring invitation
to aspiring rock climbers. The wilderness here is ideal for adventures
sports, and rock climbing is a year- round sport.
Delhi Tourism provides the requisite equipment and training to scale
the rocks in the vicinity of the Qutab Minar. Extended walk are
also a fascinating option here given the rich variety of plants,
flowers birds and insects. This exploration is throughout the year
except the monsoon. Parasailing is another adventurous option.
Delhi Tourism can arrange Parasailing for beginners even at Kanwar
Sheikha near Sohna in Haryana about 60 kms from Delhi. No adavanced
training or special skills are required to learn this inexpensive
sport, which can be enjoyed by any one weighing between 40 kg and
80 kg, and without any element of risk under the watchful supervision
of trained staff. Parasailing is under an open parachute with the
aid of a special rope hooked up to a jeep.
As the jeep moves, the parachute opens and the parasailor ascends
to a height of about 100 mtrs. (Since the parasailing are limited
in number and the flying hours regulated, booking will have to be
made in advance).
Delhi Tourism has made a further contribution to the promotion of
adventure sports by establishing the Adventure Club. This open to
all Indian nationals above the age of 10. The club provides special
packages in all adventure sports - parasailing, trekking, mountaineering
expeditions, rock climbing, water sports, including white water
rafting in the Ganga at Shivpuri, and adventure camps including
the Ganga Adventure Package. A Water Sports Club has also recently
been established by Delhi Tourism.
