covering 820 sq.km in the forested foothills east of Haridwar, is
best known for its elephants. The vegetation ranges from riverine,
to chir pine forests interspersed with areas of scrub & pasture
which support a wide variety of fauna with over 23 species of mammals,
180 bird species and 313 avi fauna species. One may watch a herd
of elephants roaming majestically in the jungle or may find oneself
excited by other mammals, including tigers, leopard, spotted deer,
sambhar, nilgai, wildboar, ghural, languor & macaque.
Bird life includes peacocks, jungle fowls, kaleej pheasants, cuckoos,
hornbills, woodpeckers, bee eaters etc. The river shelters fish
in abundance.
Fishing is allowed with permit. Chilla the nearby village has the
necessary infrastructure in place for the visitors. From Chilla
it is 'possible to have elephant rides into the park or hire jeeps
from the forest office close to the Tourist Bungalow.
