
India Rails : Konkan Railway
A
breathtaking journey, traversing the beautiful Konkan Railway
is a 760 km long adventure on rails. It is the largest railway
project undertaken by the Indian Railway in the current century.
The railway line traverses through some of the most formidable
terrain ever encountered in the history of railway construction.
It is the first time that a major transport infrastructre project
in the country has been completed on the B.O.T. ( Build, Operate
& Transfer) concept.
The construction of this project commenced on 15 th october 1990
& was completed & commissioned for both goods & passenger
traffic on 26th January 1998.
Th 760 km long railway project involves construction of 179 major
bridges, 1819 minor bridges, 92 tunnels & 89 million cu.m.
earthwork in cutting & embankments.
The project involves bridging of deep valleys as well as wide
perennial rivers. The longest bridge on the project is across
river Sharavati near Honnavar & is 2.065 km in lengh. The
tallest viaduct is across Panval Nandi nearRatnagiri in Maharashtra
State with a height of 64 meter ( 210 ft ) which is the tallest
bridge in Indian sub-continent.
