Kundgrama
Vaishali is one of the most ancient and famous ites in India. It has been identified
with the mdern village of Basadh and its neighbouring in the district of
Muzaffarpur in the State of Bihar. Due to its association with Buddha, Mahavira
and Lichhavis and also, later on with imperial Guptas Vaishali has, from
the very beginning of Indian Archaeology attracted the attention of archaeologists.
Vaishali or modern Basarh is a village in the North-west corner of Hajipur subdiision
in the Vaishali District. It is situated 32 Kms. North west of Hajipur. It has
been identified as the birth place of Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism
(599-527 B.C).
Vaishali figures prominently in Jain Literatures. The Jains. Both Swetambars
and Digmbars state that Vardhamana Mahavira was the son of siddhartha of undpura
or Kundgrama a suburb of Vaishali.
The location of Kundgrama with the modern village of Vasokund is about 2 kms
north-east of the Garth Mound.
