Situated
at an altitude of 1250 metres (approx) above sea-level and about
25 km from Tseminyu via Phiro village, Mount Totsu has many legends
behind it. The two adjacent faces of the rocky mountain are divided
by deep cliffs having a gorge in between.
This phenomenon is explained by a legend, which says that, in the fight between
the two different tribes of the mountain, one lost its right ear and other lost
its head. And truly both of them have telltale signs of it.
The mountain is believed to be guarded by a giant snake and a crab. There are
small lakes and other water bodies at the foothills of the mountain. One of these
lakes was the home of a legendary mortal called Nsantbung who married the lady
spirit of the lake, who was believed to be very kindhearted.
Mount Totsu is an ideal place for rock climbing. A base camp is being constructed
by the Tourism Department to provide a resting place for climbers. On the lower
reaches of the mountain, Nzu river flows down gently to Doyang. This river has
a magnificent basin, ideal for camping and picnicking.
