Jaipur,
popularly known as the Pink City was founded in 1727 A.D. by one
of the greatest rulers of his time-Maharaja Sawai Jai Singhll and
designed by architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya. A marvel of town planning,
Jaipur was designed in accordance with the ancient Hindu principles
of architecture. The City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal are
within walking distance from each other. The main streets are like
open museums where one can see the most amazing variety of traditional
crafts and arts.
Areas of interest outside the walled city are the Ram Niwas Garden,
the Central Museum, Maharani- ki-Chhatri, Gaitor, Vidyadhar Garden
and Sisodia Rani Garden. A little away from the walled city are
the forts of Nahargarh, Jaigarh and the Amer Palace.
Jaipur plays host to a plethora of festivities in March, corresponding
to the Hindu month of Phalgun. The Elephant Festival held on the
eve of Holi, comprises a huge procession of elephants, camels, horses
and folk dancers.
In Chaksu, 43 kms. from Jaipur, an annual fair honours Sheetia Mata,
the goddess with the ability to cure smallpox.
Dausa is a small town on the Jaipur-Agra road. Several small but
interesting havelis are located in and around Dausa besides an old
fort and temples.
