Udaipur,
RaJsamand and Chittaurgarh Districts make up the Mewar region which
abounds in lakes and hills and has one of the most fertile lands
to be found in Rajasthan. The royal line of Mewar also has the honour
of being the oldest of Rajasthan's erstwhile ruling dynasties.
Udaipur, known as the City of Lakes is one of Rajasthan's most beautiful
cities. On the edge of Lake Pichhola stands the majestic City Palace
with its massive domes, walls, arches, cuppolas and turrets. Located
inside the palace are such marvels as Fateh Prakash, Suraj Gokhada
and Bada Mahal. Other places of interest are the Jagdish Temple,
Sahelion ki Ban, Sajjan Niwas and Sajjan Garh.
A little distance away from Udaipur is the temple town of Nathdwara,
renowned for its temple dedicated to Shrinathji. It is believed
that the site of the temple was selected by Lord Krishna himself.
When the statue was being moved to a safer place to escape the wrath
of the invading Mughals, the wheels of the chariot sank into the
sand. This was seen as the Lord's wish to dwell here and a temple
was erected at that very spot. Around this temple grew a township.
This temple attracts devotees througout the year.
The magnificent temple complex of Ranakpur is one of the five main
holy places of the Jains. Though over 500 years old, these temples
are very well preserved and are an architectural marvel. The intricate
carvings of these temples continue to attract people to this day
Very few temples in the country can match the beauty of these temples.
Chittaurgarh has a glorious history of chivalry. Its legendary heroes
are remembered to this day and tales of their valour are sung by
folk musicians all over Rajasthan. The fort of Chittaurgarh stands
at a height of 180 metres and spreads over 700 acres of land. A
rugged and impressive fort, it has several interesting monuments
like the Victory Tower, the palaces of Rana Kumbha and Rani Padmini,
the temple where the princess turned saint-poetess Meera Bai composed
and sang devotional songs dedicated to her Girdhar Gopala (Lord
Krishna).
