Grand
Anaicut - Kallanai :
Not far from the Srirangam island is one of the greatest engineering
marvels of India - The Grand Anaicut built by Karikalan Cholan in
the 2nd Century A.D. to harness the waters of the Calvary. Made
of stone, the dam is 329 m long and 20 m wide and still very much
in use.
Mukkombu - Picnic Spot
Additions have been made in the form of a road bridge on the dam.
This is a good picnic spot.
Samayapuram (20 km) :
This is a very important place of pilgrimage, famous for its temple
dedicated to the goddess Mariamman
Vayaloor (8 Km) :
Located on the outskirts of Trichy. There is a small Lord Muruga
Temple set amidst lush green vegetation.
Tiruvellarai (25 Km) :
Tiruvellarai is a place for Vishnu Temple 25 Kms away from Tiruchirappalli
town. The
Tiruvellarai Temple is famous for its Architecture and Swastika
shaped water tank.
Mukkombu (Upper Anaicut) 18 km:
At the head of the Srirangam island, there lies another dam called
Upper Anaicut or Mukkombu, which is about 685 m long. Constructed
in the 19th century across the Kollidam, this dam has been forked
into three sections instead of one long stretch because of the shape
of the island.
Gunaseelam (24 km) :
Gunaseelam is situated 24 km away from Tiruchirappalli on the north
bank of Cauvery River, in Tiruchirappalli Musiri Road. There is
a Vaishnavite Temple and the name of the God is Lord Prasanna Venkateshwarar.
Gunaseelam Temple is a place for worship, festivals and also for
mental relief or alleviation.
Puliancholai (72 km) :
Puliancholai is 72 km from Tiruchira- Palli which is on the foot
hills of Kollimalai, a place of scenic beauty. This forest area
is cool and green with the added attraction of the small water falls

Elakkurichi (65 km) :
Elakkurichi is famous for the ancient church built by the Catholic
Missionary, Constantine Joseph Beschi, popularly known as Veeramamunivar.
Ranjankudikottai (70 km) :
Ranjankudikottai is a fort on NH 45, is 70 km away from Tiruchirappalli
and 16 km away from Perambalur. This Fort is believed to have been
built by the Jageerdars of the Nawab of Arcot. The Fort is under
the control of Archaeological Survey of India.
KARUR DISTRICT
Karur, 75 km from Tiruchirappalli was the ancient capital and a
historical place. This is a busy handloom centre and famous for
Automobile Industry. Pasupatheeswarar Temple and Mariamman Temple
are popular among the public.
Mayanur Cauvery Bank located in this District is quite an attractive
place.
ARIYALUR DISTRICT
Ariyalur is a new district in Tamilnadu state 60 Km away from Tiruchirappalli.
Magnificient Temple Gangai Konda Cholapuram is situated in Ariyalur
District. Vettakkudi - Karaivetti Birds Sanctuary, Thirumazhapadi
Temple, Thirumanur Temple, Keelapaluvar, Melapaluvur Monuments and
Fossil collections of Ariyalur region are very popular in this region.
Gangaikonda Cholapuram:
Gangaikondacholapuram is famous for the Brahadeesh-wara Temple,
built by the Chola King Rajendra Chola (1012-1044 AD). It is 100
km away from Tiruchirappalli via Jayarnkondam. The Temple is a fine
example of Chola's Temple Architecture.
Thirumazhapadi :
Once it was the region of Chola's dynasty. The place Thirumazhapadi
is situated on the bank of Kollidam river which is a branch of Cauvery
River. Entire surroundings are filled with paddy and sugar cane
fields. The famous Siva Temple is located in Thirumazhapadi. This
Temple is called Sri Vaithiyanatha Samy Koil.
Vettakudi - Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary
:
Situated in Ariyalur District, 65 km away from Tiruchirappalli and
35 km north of Thanjavur, this bird sanctuary sprawls over 454 Ha.
of area. Water birds congregate here during November - February.
About 50 species of resident and migratory birds are recorded here.
The list includes varities of Stork, Pelicans, Heron, Darter, Ibis,
Egrets, Coot, Terns, Cormorants, King Fisher, Plovers etc. For more

PUDUKKOTTAI DISTRICT
PUDUKKOTTAI (53 km)
Pudukkottai town is the headquarters of the District of the same
name. Once a princely State, the area, which com- prises the district,
is of absorbing interest to historians, anthropologists, archaeologists
and lovers of art. The numerous dolmens, stone circles and other
forms of mega- lithic burials in the district indicate the antiquity
of this region dating back to pre-historic and proto-historical
times. This tract is mentioned in the Sangam classics. Thirumayam
Fort The Rulers of Pudukkottai have built several beautiful palaces
and also constructed tanks and canals. The Collectorate of the district
is now functioning in one of the palaces.
AVUDAIYARKOVIL (94 km)
This ancient Athmanathaswamy temple (44 Km from Pudukkottai) here
contains life-size sculptures and is noted for its zephyr (granite
roof) work. This temple was built in the 10th century A.D.
VIRAUMALAI (30 km)
The temple of Lord Subramanya is situated on a hillock. There is
also a peacock anctuary.
NARTHAMALAI (17 km)
Narthamalai has some of the oldest structural stone temples, built
by the Mutharaiyars. This temple has six large skillfully carved
statues of Vishnu in the central hall. A 9th century Pallava cave
temple dedicated to Siva lies to the south, and in front of this
is the Vijayalaya Choliswaran temple. Vijayalaya was the first of
the Later Cholas and as such, this Siva temple is one of the earliest
Chola creations, not as grand as the ones that were to follow. However,
glimpses of an artistic greatness that was still to come can be
seen in the beautiful figures of the dancers in front of the vimana,
the elegantly carved dwarapalakas and the figures of other gods.
